Erie Days

Our 4 days on Lake Erie were peaceful, and the days melted together. We rode through some pretty lakeside towns, and lots of farm country.

We had ice cream for every meal (I wish).

There were lots of birds to see and hear. Throughout our ride, the most common sight was the red-winged blackbird. On a brushy bike path, a cardinal and blue jay crossed right in front of us. We identified, misidentified, or just saw many other species. Here is one of the larger groups of turkey vultures we rode by:

We nearly became carrion for the vultures when a dump truck pulled out of a driveway in front of us. Really, the truck did not come too close to us, but we had to brake, and had a second crash. Lee got some scrapes, but was fine. However, he needed to get to a bike shop, so we rode to St. Thomas. After some quiet days, we were happy to enter even a small city. After Lee's brake was bent back to its right shape, we treated ourselves to dinner and beers at a sports bar, and talked to various kind folks.

Every night we depended on either the kindness and/or obliviousness of strangers, and camped for free. We slept in a park pavilion, a backyard, and a couple stealth camp setups.

We met a seasoned bike tourist riding solo, and a young pair of tourists from Detroit. They advised us that we could not cross the bridge into Detroit by bicycle, so we rode north to Walpole Island to catch a quick ferry ride into Algonac, Michigan. Canada: A+.
